The 2nd Rigzin Lekden Dudjom Dorje

The second Dorje Drak Rigzin Lekden Dorje whose secret names were Dorje Drolod Tsal, Nyida Woezer, and Padma Nakpo) According to the Padma Kathang: “When border armies collapse the center, when Dri and Phagpa fight, when Central Tibet and Tsang fragment into Phagdru and Tsalpa, then the hidden treasure of Tak tsang Zablung should not be left but extracted, as this sign is revealed. The treasure revealer called Dorje Drolod will emerge.”

According to many prophecies such as the Rigzin Yongdui Lungjang and the General Tantra Prophecy, this being was born in the Water Monkey year of the 9th Rabjung cycle (1512 CE) on the 10th day of the Monkey month. He was born to father Jamyang Rinchen Gyaltsen, a great scholar and accomplished master of the Ngari royal lineage descended from the divine race of Clear Light, and mother Drocham Thrompa Gyen. On this day, his parents, children, and entourage performed extensive offerings for the 10th day, and his elder brother Ngari Penchen performed the torma empowerment of the 10th day, thus becoming the first teacher of that lifetime. His mother taught him the reading and instructed him that auspicious dreams during pregnancy indicated Guru Rinpoche’s blessings.

His father cut his hair and gave him the religious name Nyida Drak Zang, but following Kunkyong lingpa’s prophecy, he became widely known as Lekden Dudjom. Beginning with the Eight Activity Texts, he was taught various religious practices from sutras and tantras. His father remarked that he possessed great intelligence. For one or two years, he Showed childish behavior, and due to his wild conduct, people said, “This is undoubtedly the spirit Lekden.”

At that time, he had aunt named Kyong-nge whom he loved dearly. When she died of food poisoning, he experienced unbearable suffering, which caused him to contemplate impermanence. His holy father bestowed empowerments, transmissions, and instructions of the Mandala of Sixty-Five Deities from the Sutra tradition to an assembly of about 120 tantric monks, which he received. Subsequently, he received various empowerments, transmissions, instructions, pith instructions, practical guidance, mantra composition, breath control, melody, Chanting notations, drawing, and the three aspects of dance continuously for three years.

His father said, “Wangyal, please take care of Lekden,” so he followed his elder brother and received all the teachings that were given. He also received the Three Cycles of Northern Treasure Practice, the Command of the Three Roots, and other teachings from the treasure revealer Ngakchang Shakya Zangpo. He then stayed in retreat with his teacher at Mount Palbar, where his meditation progressed and he had many pure visions.

From the secret compartment of Vairochana in the upper chamber of Samye, he extracted the profound teachings Rigdzin Yongdu and the Great Compassionate One that Liberates Samsara into the Expanse. From Rinchen Nyingpo Rock, he discovered the life practice Nectar Spiral. From Wonphu Taksang, he discovered Guru Drakpo with Nine Heads and other profound treasures comprising three volumes.

He also opened the door to the sacred hidden land of Sikkim. He bestowed nearly all the instructions of the Early Translation school and treasure teachings to Chogyal Tashi Tobgyal of jangter, appointing him as the dharma custodian of the Northern treasure tradition, and gave many prophecies for the future.

Among his disciples were Chogyal Tashi Tobgyal, Drigungpa Rinchen Phuntsok, and many others. Chogyal Jangpa established an extensive dharma center of the Early Translation Vajrayana at a place called Sang-Ri, where he served as abbot and fulfilled the wishes of disciples according to their needs.

When he reached the age of 113, recognizing that he had completed his work with disciples, he taught the Six Bardos of Dzogchen Zangthal at Sang-ngak Thekchok Ling. When he announced his intention to pass away, the great Dharma King implored him not to depart. In response, he said, “I cannot stay this time. If it matters that much to you, I will be reborn as your son.” Having made this prophecy, he finally passed into peace in the 10th Rabjung cycle (1625 CE).
